This exhibition is a vibrant celebration of Llael’s love for lemons, capturing their rich symbolism, colour, and form through her signature style.Following the success of her debut solo exhibition at Compendium Gallery, we are delighted to welcome Llael McDonald back for her highly anticipated second show, Lambent. Taking its title from a word that means "softly glowing", the exhibition continues Llael’s poetic exploration of still life through rich symbolism, saturated colour, and quiet intensity.

At the heart of Lambent is Llael’s enduring love of lemons. Whether rendered as a vibrant twist in a martini glass, a carefully hand-peeled form, or paired with a pot of Earl Grey tea, the lemon becomes a recurring character in her visual storytelling. These new works also include her signature oysters, painted with the textural richness and moody lighting that define her style. Each piece invites the viewer to slow down, observe, and find meaning in the small rituals and objects of domestic life.

Through painterly layers and thoughtful composition, Llael captures fleeting moments of calm, memory, and sensual pleasure. Her work transforms the everyday into something quietly radiant and emotionally resonant.

Llael McDonald is celebrated for her nostalgic and emotive paintings that evoke personal and varied interpretations. Her practice focuses on elevating the everyday, bringing domestic objects and culinary scenes into the spotlight with emotional depth and visual richness. Through her exploration of food, rituals, and memory, Llael reveals the cultural and connective power embedded in familiar things.

Born and raised in Spotswood, Melbourne, Llael showed a strong passion for the visual arts from a young age. She refined her craft at the Independent College of Art and Design on Chapel Street, studying under artist Terri Matassonni and graduating in 1996 with one of the school’s top portfolios.

This exhibition marks her second solo show with Compendium Gallery. We are proud to once again present Llael’s distinctive vision and celebrate her ability to make the ordinary glow with meaning.

Join us for the opening night on Friday, 30th May, with the exhibition running from 30th May to 21st June. To be the first to receive Llael’s exhibition catalogue, contact the gallery to join her preview email list.
